China's Gold Imports Boom Through Hong Kong Amid Falling Prices

China's net gold imports via Hong Kong surged in June, with mainland China bringing in a net 50.679 metric tons of gold through the financial hub. This is more than double the amount imported in June last year, when just 19.366 tons were brought in.

The total gold imports through Hong Kong rose to 78.147 tons in June, slightly below May's 53.674 tons but still a significant increase. The People's Bank of China reported its largest monthly rise in gold reserves in over two and a half years, with a total of 75.44 million fine troy ounces held.

The contrast between the rising gold imports and falling gold prices is notable, with spot gold dropping by over 11% in June. However, analysts caution that some swings may reflect changes to contract terms rather than fundamental demand shifts.
