China's Gold Imports Surge to Highest Level Since 2017
Chinese gold imports have reached their highest level in nearly a decade, according to recent data from China's General Administration of Customs. So far this year, China has spent $158.8 billion importing over 1,100 tonnes of gold through the first eight months of 2026.
This marks a significant increase in Chinese demand for gold, with China ranking as the world's largest gold market. The country's gold imports have been on the rise, driven by growing economic and financial uncertainty, and a desire to diversify its reserves.
However, it's worth noting that gold withdrawals from the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) fell 22 percent month-on-month in August to 62 tonnes. This could indicate some caution among investors or a reduction in demand for physical gold.
