China's 'Gold Road' initiative has become a central component in the country's national security strategy, economic policies, and international relationships. The initiative aims to promote yuan-based gold trading and settlement globally.

The report from S&P Global notes that China's globalization strategy was interrupted by COVID-19 but has since been revived with a renewed focus on gold. This focus is driven by the country's long-term goals of improving economic resilience, reducing foreign reliance, and broadening the use of the yuan.

China has resumed its gold-buying spree in late 2022, and the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) recommitted to the 'Gold Road' initiative. The initiative targets countries that are members of BRICS and the Belt and Road program, tying into Beijing's trade and diplomatic efforts across the Global South.

The 'Gold Road' targets establishing a global network of gold vaults that support gold trading in yuan and conversion into gold stored in the vaults. The first offshore vault was established in Hong Kong in 2025, paired with two yuan-based gold contracts that settle in the Chinese currency or physical gold delivery.

The report expects China to pursue these plans for gold as tensions and conflicts continue to arise around the world. It notes that these plans incorporate past policy goals as well as new security considerations, making one certainty: China's role in global gold markets will grow further as these efforts unfold.
