The global food crisis is escalating to alarming levels, with supply-demand gaps reaching their highest in two decades. The war in Ukraine and Middle East conflict are pushing agricultural commodity prices to new highs, elevating food security risks worldwide.

A recent report by HSBC warns that the combined impact of these factors will lead to a global grain production deficit for the first time since 2020/21, with a supply-demand gap not seen since 2006/07. Grain prices have already surged 22% year-over-year as of July, and preliminary August data show an even wider increase of 30%. Cocoa and coffee prices have also risen sharply.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) Food Price Index has climbed 5% year-to-date, its highest level since 2023. JPMorgan projects that global food inflation will accelerate from 2.8% in H1 2026 to 5% in H1 2027, with emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, and Brazil bearing the brunt.

The severity of El Niño is a major concern, with its probability exceeding 90%. This phenomenon can push global food commodity prices up by 9% within 16 months of event onset, with impacts lasting up to two years. Historically, El Niño reduces corn, rice, and wheat yields by up to 4%, while soybean yields may rise by approximately 5%.
