China's Gold Strategy Bolsters Investment Case for Precious Metal

China's growing interest in gold is strengthening the long-term investment case for the precious metal. The country is building an international network of gold vaults to connect its currency, the yuan, more closely to gold.

The goal is to make the yuan a more attractive currency for use in international trade. Gold is widely traded and can be easily exchanged for other currencies, making it a valuable asset for global transactions.

China has already established an offshore gold delivery vault in Hong Kong through the Shanghai Gold Exchange. It has also introduced yuan-denominated gold contracts that can be settled in cash or physical delivery.

In addition to building its network of gold vaults, China continues to accumulate gold for its own reserves. Its official gold holdings reached 76.08 million ounces by the end of July, marking 21 consecutive months of reported buying.

This infrastructure and accumulation effort do not guarantee that gold prices will always rise. However, they do provide strong evidence that one of the world's largest economies considers gold a strategically important asset.
