China's LNG Demand Growth Undermined by Energy Self-Sufficiency Drive
China's growing energy self-sufficiency is weakening its demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG), potentially undermining future projects that depend on long-term import needs from Asia and Europe.
The country was once seen as the key driver of global LNG growth, justifying billions in export infrastructure investment. However, with China's appetite for LNG flagging, producers are preparing for a wave of new supply in coming years.
S&P analyst Megan Jenkins said even after Persian Gulf LNG supply is restored, China will adopt a more conservative approach to LNG due to heightened energy security concerns.
