China's Oil Imports Decline Sharply Amid High Prices and Supply Risks

China's oil imports rose modestly in August compared to July, but remained nearly 40% below pre-conflict levels. The country received approximately 7.14 million barrels per day of seaborne crude oil imports in August, up from 6.93 million in July, according to data from analytics firm Kpler.

However, this increase masks a larger shift as Chinese refiners balance high prices, supply risks, and growing fuel exports. The decline in China's seaborne imports has been a key part of the market's adjustment to reduced supplies from the Middle East due to restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

China's seaborne crude oil imports have declined by 4.27 million barrels per day compared to the three-month average before the conflict involving Iran began. The total seaborne crude oil imports by Asian countries also decreased, down from 23.40 million in July to 22.64 million in August.

The impact of China's reduced imports on the balance of Asia's oil market and future price direction is significant. Several factors will influence China's decisions, including small independent refineries losing access to Iranian crude and competing with India for Russian supplies.
