Washington's plan to isolate Iran economically may face significant hurdles due to China's continued trade and oil purchases from Tehran.

The US has been trying to squeeze Iran's economy into submission with sanctions, but Beijing remains its biggest trading partner and primary oil customer. According to a report by The New York Times, the scale of their relationship is substantial: China-Iran trade reached $41.2 billion in 2025, while Chinese buyers imported approximately $31.2 billion worth of Iranian crude oil during the same year.

In fact, at times, Chinese buyers have accounted for nearly 90% of Iran's total oil exports, providing Tehran with a crucial source of foreign revenue despite extensive US sanctions. This makes it difficult for Washington to pressure Iran through conventional means, as the impact of sanctions could be limited if Chinese buyers continue purchasing Iranian crude.
