China's Record-Breaking Gold Imports Reach 1,141 Tonnes Amid Challenging Market Conditions
China's gold imports have reached an all-time high in the first eight months of this year, exceeding even full-year totals from previous years. According to customs data, China imported a record-breaking 1,141 tonnes of gold during this period, with purchases through August already surpassing those made in 2025. This surge in demand is despite the metal facing a challenging time, trading around $4,350 due to strong physical and investment demand on one side and elevated interest rates and a firm U.S. dollar on the other.
The acceleration in Chinese demand can be seen clearly when looking at historical data. January-August imports were below 200 tonnes in 2020 before climbing to roughly 400 tonnes in 2021, around 750 tonnes in 2022 and approximately 1,000 tonnes in both 2023 and 2024. Imports then dropped substantially in 2025 before surging to 1,141 tonnes during the first eight months of 2026.
Several factors are behind this buying spree, including a stronger yuan making imported bullion more attractive and strong domestic investment demand keeping Chinese gold prices at a premium to international benchmarks. Economic uncertainty and limited alternatives for Chinese investors have also supported demand.
