Chinese Triethylamine Market Gains on Upstream Ammonia Tightness
The Chinese triethylamine (TEA) market showed slight strength in late September 2026, with spot prices for Triethylamine FOB Qingdao rising 0.20% for the week ending September 25. This upward movement was followed by price stability in the first week of October. The primary driver behind this price support was the tightness in upstream liquid ammonia markets, which was exacerbated by facility maintenance shutdowns in Hebei and reduced operating loads in Shandong.
Liquid ammonia spot markets trended upward due to supply disruptions. Hebei Zhengyuan’s 600,000-ton synthetic ammonia facility entered maintenance in early September, forcing reliance on existing stock. Production facilities across Shandong, Shanxi, and the Northwest also reduced operating loads, prioritizing urea production. Although Shandong Shuntian restarted a 100,000-ton unit, the incremental output did not offset maintenance losses. High anthracite coal prices further reinforced elevated production costs.
In contrast, ethanol prices remained flat, with stable corn costs and expanding production. Despite annual processing capacities totaling 4.24 million tons undergoing shutdowns, August national ethanol production rose 3.56% month-on-month to 835,000 tons. The agrochemical sector, a significant end-use channel for TEA, showed constructive but qualified demand signals. Chinese pesticide technical prices rose 2.55% month-on-month to 73.40, following a cost-accounting notice aimed at curbing below-cost selling of important industrial products.
However, downstream demand from pharmaceutical buyers and export markets remained weak. Despite September marking the traditional peak season start, orders were limited, and the market’s capacity to absorb higher prices was constrained. The interplay of firm ammonia feedstock costs, recovering agrochemical demand, and subdued pharmaceutical and export activity is expected to keep TEA FOB Qingdao pricing consolidating at current modest levels through the Golden Week holiday period.
