CME 24/7 Gold Futures Sees Strong Trading Activity in First Weekend
CME Group's new 24/7 Gold Futures has seen significant trading activity in its first weekend, with nearly 15,000 contracts traded and $60 million in notional value. This represents a small fraction of CME's average daily trading volume of around $125 billion but shows demand for continuous regulated trading.
The introduction of 24/7 Gold Futures solves a longstanding problem for investors who want to hedge their portfolios or increase exposure to gold during periods of geopolitical uncertainty. Until now, they had to wait until markets reopened after significant news events, creating weekend gap risk and potentially sharp price movements when trading resumed.
CME's Managing Director and Global Head of Metals, Jin Hennig, said that 'Gold is a global safe-haven asset, and global events don't stop on weekends.' He added that the launch demonstrates retail traders were ready for always-on, regulated products to manage their exposure to gold.
