CNG Initiative Hits Roadblock in Abuja Amid Supply Shortages

The Federal Government's initiative to promote Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative to petrol has gained traction among motorists in Abuja, but persistent shortages and inadequate refuelling infrastructure are threatening its success.

Commercial drivers and private vehicle owners have converted their vehicles to CNG, which is significantly cheaper and produces lower carbon emissions. However, the availability of refuelling stations and steady gas supply has failed to keep pace with growing demand.

Motorists spend hours waiting in long queues at major CNG stations across Abuja, with some drivers waiting up to three days to refill their tanks. The situation has left transport operators frustrated, as many said they are unable to work or earn a living while stranded in queues.
