CNX Resources Earnings Preview Amid Weak Gas Prices

CNX Resources is set to report its third-quarter earnings on Thursday, with analysts projecting earnings of $0.60 per share on revenue of $475.48 million. This represents a significant drop from the previous quarter, when the company surprised with a $1.32-per-share profit on revenue of $618.48 million, both exceeding estimates.

The Pennsylvania-based gas producer operates mainly in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays, where natural gas prices have fallen to around $3.05 per MMBtu, down nearly 20% year-over-year. This weak pricing environment has led to a 5.54% decline in earnings per share (EPS) estimates over the past 60 days, though they have stabilized in the past week. Revenue estimates have also decreased by 0.95% over two months.

Wall Street remains cautious on CNX Resources, with a neutral rating and a mean price target of $37.25, suggesting a 3.4% downside from the current share price of $38.58. Recent analyst actions reflect this caution, with Mizuho lowering its target to $38 from $42 and Truist cutting its target to $34 from $35, both citing weaker natural gas price outlooks.

Investors will be closely watching forward-looking commentary, particularly as CNX nears the end of its seven-year strategic plan. Analysts expect management to outline its 2027 operating outlook, with a focus on capital discipline and free cash flow generation. Deep Utica development will be a key area of interest, as the company transitions from the Marcellus shale play, which is expected to be largely exhausted by decade’s end.

Another wildcard is environmental attribute monetization. CNX has been leveraging coalbed methane recovery and renewable methane gas opportunities, along with 45Z tax credits, to generate additional revenue streams. These could help insulate the company from commodity price volatility, a critical factor given current market conditions.

The company trades at a forward P/E ratio of 10.86, with a gross margin of 73.62%, reflecting its low-cost production focus. CNX has achieved total revenue growth of 18.01% over the trailing twelve months, though year-over-year comparisons for the September quarter indicate an 18.55% revenue decline and a 50.21% drop in earnings, driven by lower production volumes and weaker realizations.
