Codelco Profit Surges on Copper Price Rally Amid Production Headwinds
Chile's state-owned mining company Codelco reported significantly stronger first-half earnings due to higher copper prices, despite weaker production and increased costs. The company's pre-tax profit for the period was $1.97 billion, more than fourfold from the previous year's $429 million.
The increase in profits is largely attributed to a significant jump in copper prices, which rose to 653.2 cents per pound from 461.7 cents a year earlier. However, Codelco's own copper production fell by 11% to 564,000 metric tons due to operational restrictions at El Teniente and lower output at Chuquicamata.
The company's direct cash cost rose 7% to 231.6 cents per pound as a result of the weaker output. Chairman Bernardo Fontaine had earlier expressed concerns about achieving the company's production target of 1.33 million tons to 1.36 million tons for this year, given the current production trend.
New CEO Jorge Gomez is prioritizing restoring productivity after setbacks at key mines and reviewing the company's investment priorities and debt burden.
