Europe's Gas Storage Levels Plunge Amid Redirected LNG Shipments
The European Union is racing against time to replenish its natural gas reserves before winter sets in. After devoting two years to restoring gas security following Russia's pipeline delivery halt, Europe faces elevated prices amid global market instability.
Montel reports that the bloc's 90% storage goal has become unattainable due to LNG shipments being redirected to Asia. The European Commission has allowed EU nations to refill their storage to levels below 90%, aiming to avoid panic buying and price increases.
Despite this allowance, which can be as low as 75%, European gas storage was at only 5% capacity at the end of July. This trails last year's level by roughly 12 percentage points and falls short of the five-year average by 16 points.
Joachim Endress from Montel stated, 'Ongoing interruptions to LNG shipments via the Strait of Hormuz mean that pressure is mounting on Europe's gas market as winter nears.'
