Codelco's El Teniente Mine Hit with Fresh Copper Supply Setbacks
Codelco's El Teniente mine has suspended development of its Andes Norte section due to concerns over seismic risks associated with mining at greater depths. The pause in expansion is part of a broader effort to address operational challenges and recover production levels, which have been below previous targets.
The Andes Norte project was intended to form a key part of El Teniente's long-term strategy for increased copper output. However, the decision to suspend development has raised fresh concerns about global copper supply, particularly as other major producers face their own challenges and the market continues to experience strong demand from electrification and digital infrastructure.
Codelco had previously set an ambitious target of restoring annual copper production at El Teniente to 1.7 million tonnes by 2030. However, this objective is now seen as unachievable under current conditions, following a series of setbacks including the fatal rockburst that occurred in 2025 near areas affected by the Andes Norte project.
