Copper Crunch Hits Global Markets as Chile's Production Stagnates
The copper market is facing a crunch due to supply constraints and declining ore grades. The price of copper surged over 40% in 2025 and hit record highs in 2026, reflecting strong demand. Copper is essential for various industries, including AI infrastructure, electric vehicles, and power grids, and its desirability stems from its thermal and electrical conductivity, malleability, and corrosion resistance.
Chile, the world's largest copper producer, accounting for approximately 18% of global reserves, appears unable to capitalize on climbing demand. Despite every indication of increasing demand, Chilean state-run company Codelco expects production to remain stagnant in the coming years.
The challenges facing Chile are economic rather than geological. Declining ore grades and production shortfalls are common among copper miners, requiring them to process more rock to produce the same amount of copper. This increases energy, capital, and infrastructure requirements to maintain production.
