Copper Frenzy Ignites Surge Copper's Berg Project
Copper prices are surging to record levels, pushing Surge Copper's Berg project into the spotlight. The London Metal Exchange's copper spot price has reached $14,294 per tonne, with the commodity's backwardation widening to its steepest level since 2021.
The physical squeeze in global copper markets is a major driver of this trend, with LME registered inventories hovering near lows seen in February 2026 after a 42-day stretch of continuous drawdowns. This tightness has led to an acute supply-demand imbalance, which is reshaping how investors value copper deposits in stable jurisdictions like Canada.
For Surge Copper, the current pricing environment dramatically alters the economics of its flagship Berg copper project. The company's pre-feasibility study assumes a post-tax net present value of C$4.6 billion with an internal rate of return of 24%. However, media estimates suggest the post-tax NPV could plausibly reach C$9.4 billion, more than double the base-case figure.
