Copper Logjam Hits Port of New Orleans Amid Tariff Uncertainty

The Port of New Orleans is facing a logjam due to a surge in copper imports from Africa and South America, with over half a billion dollars worth of African copper arriving on a single ship, the Nord Norfolk. The vessel, which departed from Liberia, carries the highest market value for a single commodity shipment ever recorded by analytics firm Kpler.

The influx of copper is attributed to traders bracing for potential import tariffs under President Donald Trump's administration. Despite months of uncertainty, the metal continues to pour in, driven by arbitrage profits and a record-breaking rally in copper prices.

US futures have rallied sharply, creating huge profits for traders and producers shipping copper to the US. However, as doubts grow about whether Trump will push ahead with tariffs, the gap between US and international prices has narrowed, weakening the incentive to continue shipping to the US.

Likewise, shipper BBC Chartering added Mobile, Alabama as another stop for South American copper, further indicating a shift in supply chains. The potential for tariffs has already had its desired effect, bringing lots of supply into the country and increasing domestic premiums to support domestic projects.
