Copper Miners Ride High on Tightening Supplies and Soaring Demand
Copper miners have been experiencing strong price gains in August, and it's not just due to rising copper prices. According to Jacob White, CFA, director of ETF product management at Sprott Asset Management, the growth is also attributed to a tightening supply market.
The Nasdaq Sprott Copper Miners Index saw a 17.11% increase across August, and the Nasdaq Sprott Junior Copper Miners Index surged 20.76%. White pointed out that copper mining equities are benefiting from high copper prices while also reaping rewards from supply constraints.
These constraints include mine disruptions, lower ore grades, and aging mine operations, which have left copper supplies struggling to keep up with growing demand. As a result, the global market is less able to absorb further disruptions as demand continues to grow from electricity grids, AI data centers, and defense programs.
