Copper Overtakes Iron Ore as BHP's Top Earnings Engine
BHP Group has reported that copper has overtaken iron ore as its largest earnings engine. The shift is primarily driven by price rather than volume, with the average realised copper price increasing sharply over the year.
The company's management described copper as the engine driving the group's growth and stated that the copper business is now generating enough free cash flow to fund its own expansion.
A wage dispute at the Escondida copper mine in Chile has added a note of caution, with reports suggesting a possible strike amid a wage dispute with workers. Labour disruptions at large Chilean copper mines are not new and typically involve several rounds of offers before any stoppage occurs.
China's September factory surveys and local inflation data will provide further signals on the market this week. BHP is the largest company on the Australian Securities Exchange by market value and its share price has tended to move with each new data point.
