Copper Prices Hold Firm Near Record High Amid Supply Disruptions
Copper futures in the US continue to hover near record highs, trading at around $6.70 per pound. This price remains close to the all-time high of $6.80 reached on September 8th.
The current supply and demand dynamics are largely driving this trend. Global supply is being pinched due to disruptions in key mining operations. The largest copper mine in the world, BHP's Escondida mine in Chile, has been shut down indefinitely following a fatal accident involving a worker. This incident has heightened tensions between union members and management during ongoing contract negotiations.
Additionally, multiple refineries in China have scheduled maintenance for the fourth quarter, adding to global supply pressures. As a result, the copper prompt spread on the LME has widened to its highest level this month.
The robust demand side of the equation remains strong, however. US manufacturing activity surged in September, driven by solid demand for base metals like copper. Long-term prospects are also buoyed by booming orders for global electrification projects, including data centers in the US and energy storage infrastructure in China.
