Copper Prices Plunge Amid Tariff Uncertainty, But Supply Woes Persist
Copper prices plummeted this week as the Trump administration appeared to reconsider tariffs on refined copper. However, don't expect immediate relief for contractors who rely heavily on the metal.
The current supply problem in the US is a pressing concern, with copper being a critical component in various industries including electrical systems, HVAC equipment, and data centers. The price of copper wire and cable surged 4.2% in August alone and 27.2% over the past year, with prices increasing by 104.9% since 2020.
While the tariff's uncertainty is causing short-term volatility in exchange-traded metal, it won't address the underlying supply issue. The US imports roughly half of its copper each year and has only two operating smelters. New mining, smelting, and refining capacity would take time to develop.
