Copper Prices Plunge as Freeport-McMoRan Stock Slips
Freeport-McMoRan's stock slipped as copper futures retreated from record highs set earlier this month. The decline in copper prices, combined with rising Treasury yields and a surge in oil, added pressure to the metals complex.
The Grasberg district in Indonesia remains central to Freeport-McMoRan's production story, along with domestic leaching efforts. However, the company's revenue is closely tied to copper prices, which affect realized pricing.
Rising sovereign bond yields lifted the dollar and raised borrowing costs across industrial supply chains, historically pressuring dollar-priced commodities. Traders also pointed to positioning, as speculative holdings in copper futures had grown crowded before the decline.
