Copper Prices Poised for Extended Bull Run
Copper's next supercycle is expected to be driven by accelerating structural demand and constrained supply. According to analysts, copper demand will rise from 28 million metric tons in 2025 to 42 million metric tons by 2040, fueled by electrification, renewable energy, AI infrastructure, and core economic growth.
The supply side is facing significant challenges, including declining ore grades, limited new discoveries, long mine development timelines, rising capital costs, and geographic concentration. This perfect storm of demand and supply constraints could create a prolonged copper deficit, putting sustained upward pressure on copper prices.
AI and data center investment represent an important new source of copper demand, with leading tech companies expected to spend more than $6 trillion in capital expenditures through 2030. However, key risks include global recession, weaker-than-expected AI spending, substitution, faster-than-expected supply growth, and potential Chinese demand softness.
