Copper Prices Rise Amid Chinese Demand and Supply Concerns
Copper prices have ended the week on an upward trend, despite volatility in the market. The metal's value has increased by 0.76% from last week's close, reaching $14,632 a metric ton on the London Metal Exchange.
The Chinese market is driving demand for copper, with tightness caused by reduced production schedules and lower inventory levels. Visible inventories in China have dropped off significantly, standing at 47,147 tons as of Thursday.
David Wilson, head of metals strategy at BNP Paribas, attributes the market's concerns to supply fears, particularly following the suspension of operations at BHP's Escondida mine in Chile due to a worker fatality. This has caused copper availability to become a major issue.
