Copper Prices Rise Amid Supply Constraints and Macroeconomic Headwinds
Copper prices experienced a mixed week from September 14 to 18, initially falling before rising to 110,235 RMB/ton by the end of the period. This represents a 1.18% increase from the beginning of the week and a significant 37.72% year-on-year growth.
According to data from SunSirs, copper prices have been trending upward over the past three months, with two weeks of decline followed by ten weeks of increase. Last week's slight rise was a continuation of this trend.
The London Metal Exchange (LME) reported a 5.4% increase in LME copper inventories to 255,900 tonnes by the end of the week.
From a macroeconomic perspective, expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September rose above 87%, contributing to downward pressure on copper prices. The strengthening US dollar and upward shift in US Treasury yields also had a negative impact.
