Copper Prices Soar as AI Data Centers Drive Demand
Copper prices have been rising steadily since late 2023 due to growing demand from AI hyperscalers building data centers. This trend is expected to continue as companies invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure. However, supply has not kept pace with demand, and mine development has slowed in recent years.
The copper market's insatiable appetite for the metal is driven by its use in wiring and electrical components within massive AI data centers. According to the Copper Development Association, a traditional data center requires between 5,000 and 15,000 tons of copper, while AI data centers can need up to 50,000 tons per facility.
After peaking at an all-time high of $6.68 per pound in May, copper prices dropped slightly but have since rebounded strongly, reaching $6.62 a pound as of the latest update.
