Copper Prices Soar as Demand from AI Data Centers and Electric Vehicles Grows
Copper prices have surged to record highs due to increasing demand from industries like artificial intelligence data centers, electric vehicles, and construction. As a result, the value of this versatile metal has skyrocketed, affecting not only major projects but also everyday electronics.
At United Metals Recycling in Boise, Idaho, copper is recovered from discarded materials such as insulated wire. The process involves chopping the wire into small pieces to separate the plastic coating from the copper, which is then prepared for sale by the pound.
Nick Snyder with United Metals Recycling attributes the rising price of copper to growing demand and record levels. He notes that 'copper is a commodity, so it fluctuates on a daily basis.' The current benchmark price of copper hovers around $6.60 per pound, up approximately 40% over the past year.
Trevor Felgenhauer with the Reuseum pointed out that copper can be found in various everyday electronics, including laptops and cellphones. When these items are donated to the Reuseum, staff test them to determine if they can be resold or reused. If not, materials like copper are separated for recycling.
The increasing value of copper has a ripple effect on the broader economy, as Snyder explained: 'Copper being at some all-time highs this year, that's going to affect just a three-bedroom house... Or a vehicle has copper in it. It's all kind of connected to the price of goods going up.'
