Copper Prices Soar to New Heights Amid Strong Demand

Copper prices have been on the rise in recent years, and experts are predicting that they may reach as high as $7 per pound by the end of 2026. According to Barchart, the COMEX copper futures contract rose to a new record high of $6.8795 per pound in August 2026, while LME forwards remained below their January 2026 record high of $14,527.50 per metric ton.

The increasing demand for copper is driven by its use in critical infrastructure such as power grid systems, building wire, and electronics. U.S. copper imports have tightened demand, and analysts project a refined copper deficit in 2026. The International Copper Study Group estimates a 150,000-ton deficit, while JPMorgan analysts predict a 330,000-ton shortfall.

Despite the potential for supply surpluses, experts believe that copper prices will continue to rise due to strong demand and limited production capacity. In fact, COMEX copper inventories have increased by 50.8% since the end of 2025, while LME copper stocks have risen by 61.1%. The U.S. Copper ETF (CPER) has also seen significant gains, rising 13.4% over the same period.

While some analysts may be cautious about the potential for copper prices to reach $7 per pound, many experts believe that this is a realistic target given the strong demand and limited supply. As one expert noted, 'copper could still rally and eclipse even the most bullish targets above $15,000 and $6.80,' but selling at new record highs and buying ahead of critical technical support levels has been optimal for years.
