Copper Prices Soar to Record Highs on AI and Power Grid Demand
Copper prices have reached record highs in 2026 and are currently up 15% since the start of the year, trading above $14,300 a ton on the London Metal Exchange.
The metal is essential to various industries, including power grids, electric vehicles, renewable energy, and data centers needed for artificial intelligence. Analysts at S&P Global project copper demand will rise 50% to 42 million metric tons by 2040 from 28 million tons last year, while supply is expected to be tight due to soaring demand and mining constraints.
Supply-demand imbalance has strengthened the investment case for copper. Jon Lapp recommends limiting a dedicated copper allocation to 1-3% of a portfolio, with 5% as an upper limit for someone with high risk tolerance. There are several ways investors can approach the theme: buying physical copper, investing in copper futures or ETFs, or holding companies that extract copper.
Buying physical copper comes with storage and insurance costs, while investing in copper futures or ETFs may incur costs due to periodic 'rolling' of positions. A more diversified way is to invest in companies making mining equipment and components for electric grids, utilities, and renewable energy producers along the copper supply chain.
