Copper Rush: South America Beckons as Demand Surges
The copper market has been on fire recently, with prices up nearly 50% in the past year and reaching $6.56 per pound. Analysts attribute this surge to a perfect storm of structural demand drivers and supply constraints.
Forecasts from major houses like Goldman Sachs predict a significant supply deficit as early as next year, suggesting a sustained bull market for copper.
However, executing on new projects is proving challenging due to various bottlenecks. For instance, miners in South America face difficulties with sulphur and sulphuric acid supplies, which are crucial for leaching operations.
Another challenge is securing water resources, particularly in the Atacama Desert where strict bans have been imposed on using underground aquifers.
Despite these challenges, a growing number of ASX juniors are shifting their focus to Chile, a traditional hub for copper discoveries and production. Companies like Hot Chili, Southern Hemisphere Mining, Culpeo Minerals, Norfolk Metals, and Flagship Minerals are exploring opportunities in the region, with some already securing key assets and infrastructure.
