Copper Surge Ignites Aussie Mid-Tier Assets
Copper prices have surged to new highs, reinvigorating Aussie projects and placing them in a new light. Argonaut Funds Management's David Franklyn notes that while Australia isn't known as a major copper hotspot, its mid-tier assets could produce 30-50,000tpa and have faced years of underinvestment.
Franklyn explains that the 'big picture' for copper is strong demand from multiple drivers, including electrification, energy transition, and AI data centers. This has created an opportunity for sub-scale assets in Australia to shine.
The consolidation in the Mt Isa region, with Evolution Mining acquiring Carnaby Resources and Glencore-backed Austral Resources bidding for Hammer Metals, suggests copper is having its day here as well. Aeris Resources' acquisition of Peel Mining also kickstarted consolidation in the Cobar region of NSW.
Argonaut's Will Jones attributes the physical tightness in the copper market to strong demand from smelters and shortages due to production cuts at major mines. El Nino weather patterns have hurt production in Chile and Peru, while export restrictions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are also tightening supplies.
