Copper's Time Crunch: Can El Domo Deliver as Demand Surges?
Copper's challenge is not a lack of resources in the ground, but rather supply that shows up on time. The gap between when the world needs copper and when new mines can deliver it is now the central fact of the market.
Multiple investment cycles are driving demand for copper, including electrification across developing economies, power grid expansion, renewable energy generation, and defense restocking. Data centers are also contributing to this increased demand, with the International Energy Agency (IEA) projecting a 169% increase in world electricity demand by 2050.
The challenge is that supply isn't keeping pace, reflected in copper's stable price of around $6/lb despite being at an all-time high. Producers are experiencing fat margins and improving balance sheet strength, while developers see higher metal pricing as a boon to their project economics.
