Corn Crop Acceleration: Tennessee Leads the Pack Amid Regional Disparities
The US corn crop has accelerated its maturation process, surpassing its recent historical pace in several key states. According to the USDA Crop Progress data released on September 8, 2026, 10 states are running ahead of their respective five-year averages, with some posting double-digit advantages.
Tennessee is leading this trend, with 81% of its corn crop mature, a staggering 26 percentage points above normal. The state's corn conditions also remain relatively favorable, with 42% rated good and 37% excellent.
However, not all states are experiencing the same level of maturity acceleration. Kansas, for instance, presents a more complicated picture, with its corn crop reaching 53%, but also showing significant production stress due to hot and dry weather.
Agronomist Rob Nalley noted that yields have been very good across much of Kentucky, including some record-high field results, while agronomist Jared Goplen warned about the possibility of lodging and additional losses in Minnesota's drought-affected areas.
