Corn Crop Suffers Worst Damage Since 1999 Amid Heatwave

The US corn crop is facing significant damage due to a heatwave that swept across the Midwest and Plains, according to the USDA's latest Crop Progress report. The report showed a steep decline in corn good-to-excellent condition ratings, with 63% of the crop now rated as good or excellent, down from 67% the previous week. This marks the largest single-week decline in corn condition ratings for this point in the growing season in nearly 20 years.

The damage is not limited to just one region, but is widespread across the western Corn Belt and Plains, with states such as Colorado, North Carolina, South Dakota, and Kansas bearing the brunt of the heat. Missouri, Tennessee, and North Carolina were among a handful of states that actually saw minor gains in ratings.

While the decline in condition ratings was expected, the magnitude of the drop caught even the most bearish analyst estimates off guard. The last time condition ratings dropped by at least 4 points at this point in the year was in 2007. Other notable years with larger rating declines for this time of year include 1999 and 1987.

Despite the challenges facing the corn crop, there is some hope on the horizon. The USDA predicts more favorable temperatures ahead, which could help to offset the damage caused by the heatwave. Extended weather models also continue to trend better for Midwest crops, reducing fears regarding the health of this year's corn and soybean crops.
