Corn Demand Outpaces Production as Global Grain Supplies Tighten
Global grain supplies are tightening as corn demand outpaces production, despite a record US harvest. The global market is facing an increasingly pronounced decline in stocks, with American farmers only just beginning to harvest after a record season.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that global corn consumption will exceed production by nearly 30 million metric tons in the 2026/27 marketing year, the largest shortfall in over 30 years.
Corn, wheat, and soybean futures have risen significantly in recent months, with corn traded on the Chicago Board of Trade jumping a record 16% in August alone.
The decline in global supplies is not just due to the US harvest. Weaker prospects in other major exporting countries, shifts in crop patterns, rising domestic demand, and weather risks are all contributing factors.
