Corn Futures Gain Triggers Social Security Benefits Withholding for Farmers

Two farmers took identical corn futures positions and received Social Security checks after claiming before full retirement age (FRA). When the trade closed with a $50,000 gain, one kept receiving every monthly check while the other had thousands of dollars in benefits withheld. The difference had nothing to do with the futures contract itself.

The working farmer was hedging corn he expected to grow, while the retired investor never planted a seed. Both were in the same market and made the same gain, but Social Security treated their income differently due to the nature of their business.

Social Security's retirement earnings test generally counts wages from a job and net earnings from self-employment. However, investment gains are normally outside this calculation. The farmer's gain was considered ordinary and reported on Schedule F because it was tied to his farm's production, making it subject to the Social Security earnings test.

The retired investor's speculative futures gain received capital-gain treatment and remained outside net earnings from self-employment. This meant it did not trigger Social Security retirement checks to be withheld. However, this gain still affected the investor's federal tax bill and could have raised Medicare premiums two years later through an Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) surcharge.
