Corn Rally Drives Grain Futures Higher Amid Crop Tour Optimism
Grain futures saw mixed but mostly higher prices overnight, with corn being the standout performer. December corn rallied to a new contract high after reaching a price of 15 1/2 cents above the previous day's close. The Pro Farmer Crop Tour results have been cited as the main driver of this increase, with the tour data suggesting a national US corn crop production number of 15.344 billion bushels on an average yield of 173.2 bushels per acre.
The Corn futures price gain has caught the attention of technical traders, who are now speculating if this is a 'breakaway' upside price gap that will fuel more strong gains in the near term. Meanwhile, soybean futures prices have been constrained by the final Crop Tour yield estimate, which projected a US soybean crop of 4.572 billion bushels on an average yield of 53.3 bushels per acre.
India has scrapped its wheat export ban, a move that could ease global supplies under strain from escalating attacks between Russia and Ukraine. The country's outbound wheat shipments could provide relief to import-dependent countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Winter wheat prices have been pulled higher by the big rally in corn and ongoing grain-shipping disruptions in the Black Sea region.
