Croatia Emerges as Key Gateway for US Gas Exports to Europe
Croatia is emerging as an important link in the US's strategy to expand gas supplies to Europe, particularly as the EU continues to reduce its dependence on Russian energy. The country has invested heavily in building liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving ports and expanding the gas pipeline network, making it a key transit point for US LNG exports.
The EU has been reducing its imports from Russia since the 2022 conflict broke out, with supplies now accounting for just 12% of total gas imports. To replace this supply, Europe has invested billions of euros in building new infrastructure, and the US is emerging as the largest supplier of LNG to the bloc.
The floating LNG receiving station off the coast of Krk Island in Croatia is a notable project, with a capacity of about 6.1 billion m3 of gas per year, equivalent to nearly 2% of the annual gas consumption demand of the entire EU.
