Crude Oil Prices Surge Above $86 Amid Renewed Middle East Tensions
Crude oil prices rose above $86 per barrel on September 1 amid renewed tensions in the Middle East. US-Iran hostilities resumed after nearly a month of relative calm, with US forces striking two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island and Iran responding with attacks on targets in the UAE and Jordan. These developments heightened concerns over potential disruptions to regional energy supplies.
Despite Brent crude remaining significantly below its 2026 peak, oil shipments continued to move through the Strait of Hormuz, albeit with ongoing risks to shipping. A supertanker caught fire after striking two naval mines in the strait, highlighting these dangers. In addition, refinery strikes in Russia further tightened global refining capacity, pushing refined-product margins to fresh highs.
According to market data, Brent crude is down around 40% from its 2026 high of $118 per barrel and nearly 28% below its recent high of $98 per barrel. India's crude oil imports from the US declined by 57.5% to $1.57 billion in the first quarter of 2026-27, while imports of petroleum products increased significantly.
