Crude Oil Surges on US-Iran Tensions and Low Strategic Reserves
Crude oil prices have surged in response to renewed US-Iran strikes, reigniting supply fears and pushing the Strait of Hormuz back into the spotlight.
Fawad Razaqzada, a market analyst at StoneX Media, notes that markets are now valuing barrels that can reach consumers immediately over potential future supply. This shift in focus is due to the complex and time-consuming process of increasing oil production, particularly for heavy sour crude like Venezuela's.
Venezuela's output is hindered by its expensive and technically challenging production and refining processes, making meaningful increases a multi-year project. In contrast, US strategic oil reserves are at their lowest levels in about 44 years, further underscoring the importance of immediate supply over future projections.
The crude rally has also begun to impact other markets, with equities, bond yields, and gold all feeling the effects.
