Crude Prices Soar as Global Markets Plummet Amid Saudi Strikes
Global stock markets experienced a downturn on Monday due to a sharp drop in technology equities and rising crude prices. The increase in oil prices was largely attributed to fresh strikes targeting Saudi Arabia, following a previous attack on a Saudi oil pipeline.
Brent crude rose by almost 3% after the new attacks, with prices currently sitting at $107.18 a barrel. This represents an almost 9% gain from last week's prices. The price spike is also affecting diesel, gasoline, and jet fuel, resulting in higher costs for consumers.
Markets are anticipating interest-rate increases in the United States and Japan this week, with a near-90% likelihood of the Federal Reserve raising rates on Wednesday. The European Central Bank increased rates last week, signaling further action if inflation accelerates.
The AI sector was also impacted, with shares falling after leaders at OpenAI and Anthropic urged a slowdown in AI development to mitigate risks and safeguard humanity. This warning has contributed to a decline in AI-related stocks, including Marvell, Intel, and Micron.
