Cuban doctor Daniel Del Toro González used a humble corn fritter to illustrate the stark inflation gap between prices and wages in Cuba. In a Facebook post, he explained that before the reordering of goods, corn fritters cost 1 peso, but now they sell for 30 CUP.

This price increase is staggering: 30 times more than the original price, while Del Toro's basic salary has only increased by about six times. To put it in perspective, he used to earn approximately 1,400 CUP, whereas now his monthly income is around 8,400 CUP.

The post sparked numerous reactions from Cubans who shared their own comparisons regarding the rise in prices. Some users pointed out that the price of corn fritters is even higher in other parts of the country, with one person claiming they cost 50 CUP in Camagüey.

Del Toro's comparison comes just weeks after the implementation of a new salary scale for Cuban doctors. Since July, recently graduated doctors have a basic salary of 7,045 CUP, while specialists earn around 8,500-8,880 CUP.
