Cyprus Gas Pipeline Set to Power European Markets Amid Russia-Ukraine Tensions
Cyprus is set to become a key new gas supplier for Europe as it begins shipping natural gas from its southern coast. The East Mediterranean region is rapidly emerging as an alternative energy source for European nations, driven by Russia's war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East.
France's TotalEnergies and Italy's Eni have made a final decision to proceed with developing the Cronos natural gas field off Cyprus' southern coast. This project will be the first time gas from east Mediterranean deposits is supplied to European markets.
The construction of a pipeline from the Cronos field is scheduled to start in late 2026 and take up to 18 months to complete. The gas will be conveyed to Egypt via the planned pipeline where it will be liquefied for transport by ship to Europe.
