Cyprus Gas Set to Fuel Europe by 2028 Amid Global Energy Tensions

Cyprus is poised to become an alternative energy source for European nations, thanks to its undersea natural gas deposits. The country's energy minister, Michael Damianos, announced that European consumers can expect natural gas from the Cronos field off Cyprus' southern coast by March 2028.

The Cronos project will be a major milestone in Cyprus' efforts to develop its natural gas resources. The East Mediterranean region is increasingly seen as a vital source of energy for Europe, particularly given Russia's war in Ukraine and the ongoing instability in the Middle East.

Partners TotalEnergies of France and Eni of Italy have made a final decision to proceed with developing the Cronos field, which holds over 3 trillion cubic feet of gas. The project will involve piping the gas from Cyprus to Egypt's Zohr natural gas deposit, where it will be processed for transport to Europe.
