Cyprus Left Behind as Global LNG Prices Soar Amid Supply Crunch

Global LNG prices have skyrocketed by 150% due to supply chain disruptions and competition for scarce cargoes, with European countries benefiting from an unexpected price surge.

The narrow Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy route, has been impacted by the war, trapping Qatari LNG exports. This scarcity has led to high prices, with spot prices reaching around $26 per million British thermal units.

Despite the price increase, European imports are expected to rise to nearly 8 million metric tons in September and could exceed 10 million tons in the coming months, as Asian buyers cut back on LNG purchases. However, Europe's gas storage facilities remain underfilled at around 68%, leaving them vulnerable to further price hikes.

Cyprus, which has been working on an LNG import terminal project at Vasiliko, is facing renewed scrutiny due to its unfinished state and lack of access to natural gas. The project was initially touted as a way to lower electricity prices by transitioning from expensive fuel oil and diesel to imported gas. However, the sharp rise in international LNG prices raises questions about the financial viability of the project and whether it will deliver promised savings for consumers.

The Cypriot government must now assess whether the increased LNG prices have altered the financial case for Vasiliko, considering factors such as shipping and regasification costs, oil prices, and carbon emissions. Households in Cyprus have been promised reduced electricity bills through the use of natural gas, but with the terminal still unfinished, they deserve updated figures on the project's prospects.
