Damietta Drone Strike Exposes Europe's Energy Vulnerability

The drone strike on Egypt's Damietta port exposed the fragility of European energy infrastructure. On July 29, 2026, a drone attack damaged two vessels at the port: the Energos Winter, a U.S.-owned floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), and the GasLog Salem, an LNG carrier.

The strike targeted one of the most critical energy chokepoints in the world. Damietta is a strategic location for Egypt's liquefaction infrastructure, sitting at the intersection of North African production, Eastern Mediterranean offshore discoveries, and Egyptian liquefaction infrastructure. The port serves as a transit hub for gas from Cypriot and Israeli fields to European import terminals.

The Cronos gas project, a development backed by Eni and TotalEnergies, was announced just a day before the drone strike. This coincidence raises questions about whether the attack was intended to signal vulnerability in the Eastern Mediterranean energy pipeline.
