Dangote Breaks Ground on $16 Billion Kenyan Oil Refinery
Aliko Dangote's group has begun construction of a $16 billion oil refinery in Kenya, aiming to strengthen East Africa's energy supply. The facility will be located in the Lamu area and is expected to process crude oil from African producers.
The project aims to expand fuel processing capacity in East Africa and reduce the region's dependence on imported refined products. Currently, several countries in the region rely heavily on imports of refined fuels, making them vulnerable to changes in international markets.
Dangote has offered regional governments a joint 30% stake in the facility, which is scheduled for completion in 2030. The project will also create new jobs during the construction phase and strengthen the logistics corridor connected to the port of Lamu.
