Danube Drought Hits Ukrainian Grain Exports
The low water levels in the Danube River are causing problems for Ukrainian grain exports. According to Bloomberg, the heat and lack of precipitation have resulted in record-low water levels.
This has led to barges being forced to take less cargo, increasing transportation costs, and extending delivery times to the Romanian port of Constanta.
The situation is exacerbated by increased Russian strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure, which have redirected some exports away from the Black Sea and onto alternative routes such as the Danube, railway, and motor transport.
Analysts warn that if the hostilities do not decrease and the water level does not recover, high grain prices may remain. Ukraine and Russia together provide more than a quarter of global wheat exports, creating additional risks for the market.
